How do I find my place in life? How do
I begin to figure out who I am and why I'm here?
When we are misdirected in life, or when we
simply wander off the right path a little ways, life itself will often
become boring, confusing, meaningless. We will exist each day, and
we can function as we are forced to by circumstances and needs, but we
are not really "with it." We are wandering in a fog.
Even when we reach many of the goals that
we've set for ourselves, or the goals given to us by others, we seldom
find satisfaction and joy in the things we accomplish. Gathering
money or things does not help, either. Not really. And even
the relationships we have with other people will suffer if we do not
have some grip on the reason for our being.
Temporary Fixes Do Not Solve the Problems
There are many substitutes that people find
with which to fill their days and lives. We may occupy our minds
with all kinds of things. But nothing superficial really helps.
No temporary fix reaches
the core or answers the questions that keep circling around in our
minds.
How do we find real answers? How do we
get on the right track -- the one that leads us to our personal destiny
in life? And are we destined to be the people we seem to be, or is
there a way to become the human beings we are truly meant to be?
Life is good for the man or the woman who
knows their place in life. Life is better when we are busy
fulfilling our function in life. Until we start in that direction,
life will simply continue to be less than meaningful, less than joyful.
Ask, and You will Receive...
Some two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ
was talking about many of these things. He talked about the common
needs that all people have, needs for clothing, food and shelter.
And He also talked about the ways we often try to meet those needs, and
how silly it was to fill our lives with such trivial pursuits.
Jesus said that life is much more than working to eat, working to have
clothing, and working to keep a roof over our heads.
Did He really understand how hard it can be
to accomplish some of the things we must do in life? Did He really
get how hard it is for some of us to just make ends meet? I
believe He did understand-- and that He still does. He simply
wants to point us to the truly important things.
Jesus Christ told us that we need to look
up. He said that we need to know that God is the only One who can
really answer the really hard questions in this life. God is aware
of everything we face in life. God is watching. God cares.
And God will hear us when we cry out to Him. Most important of
all, Jesus says that God will answer our prayers.
What does this mean for you and me, and the
meaning of life? It means that God is the One who made us, who
designed into us the core abilities and characteristics that we're born
with. God alone is able to answer the questions each of us should
be asking about ourselves. He alone can put all things into the
proper perspective and into the right balance. God makes things
work right.
The best thing anyone can do, then, is to go
to God Himself and begin asking for help in discovering who and what we
should be in this life. We need His help, His blessing, His clear
direction, if we want to really center our attention on the right path
for our lives.
When we ask God to guide us, He will show us
where to begin, and which way to go. It may not seem like much is
happening at first. But God will hear our prayers and he will
answer them. He will give us the wisdom and direction we need in
order to find the meaning and the highest purpose for our lives.
